Gun rights should be restricted because of all the violence that could have been prevented if there was a way Texans would evaluate who they sold a firearm to and why. Texas doesn't require a license to carry regardless of age or mental status. The state does not require background checks for private sales of firearms. They can cause more harm than good. Gun violence and deaths have increased throughout the years. 64% of all suicides in Texas were caused by some firearm,at least 32 children from ages 0-17 died in unintentional shootings, and mass shootings in Texas jump up to 65% just this year.

I believe gun safety should be one of our top priorities. My goal is for people who purchase guns to have an in-depth background check as well as psychological checks. This will allow us to detect a mentally unstable person trying to purchase a gun. I also believe buying a gun should be just as important and hard as buying a car. There should be more rigorous requirements to purchasing a firearm for example completing a gun safety training program and as well obtaining a license. In taking steps like this tragic events like the El Paso shooting, the Santa Fe high school shooting, and the Sutherland Springs church shooting can be prevented in the future.
