End Gender-Biased Lending Practices in India's Financial Institutions

The Issue

Simran Sainani, a financially capable woman, was denied a loan by KreditBee because she lacked a male co-applicant. This instance illuminated the persistent gender-biased lending policies that plague our banking system. Despite clear guidelines by India’s Reserve Bank that prohibit discriminatory lending practices based on gender, some financial institutions continue to require male guarantors from female applicants. This is not only an illegal practice but also a discriminatory hurdle that limits a woman's access to credit based on her ability to secure a male backer.

Many women have shared similar experiences of facing discrimination when trying to access loans:

  1. Shilpa Vadrevu: A female entrepreneur from Visakhapatnam, despite having an excellent credit score, was denied both housing and business loans by multiple banks because she did not have a male co-applicant. She expressed her frustration on LinkedIn, pointing out how even financially independent women are blocked from accessing loans without a male backing
  2. Richa Gupta: She encountered a similar situation when applying for a personal loan. Despite having a stable job and good financial standing, she was asked for a male guarantor. She felt it was unjust, given her ability to meet the loan terms without any male involvement.
  3. Anita Sharma: A small business owner in Delhi, when trying to expand her business, was denied a loan unless her husband signed as a guarantor. She recounted how it made her feel undermined, despite her business being profitable and her track record of paying back loans on time.

These cases highlight the deep-rooted biases that women often face, even when financially independent, due to systemic and outdated practices within the financial sector.

These gender-biased policies build an unnecessary barrier in the path of financially capable women, impeding their rights and creating a patriarchal obstacle in the economic sphere. It belittles a woman's capacity to handle her own finances, thus reinforcing harmful and outdated stereotypes. This is unacceptable and needs to be addressed promptly and forcefully.

Let us stand against such unfair practices and demand that all financial institutions, including KreditBee, be held accountable for their lending practices. Let us push for stricter enforcement of RBI rules and regulations against discriminatory lending. It is crucial that we foster an economy that encourages and embraces gender equality.

Help us dismantle these gender-biased lending practices. Sign this petition to demand justice for all females seeking loans. Together, we can make gender-biased lending a practice of the past.
