End Fuel Allowances for MPs Earning More Than £220 Weekly

The Issue

Having witnessed the developments in our government's policies, it hurts to state that the Labour Government's motion, which allows only pensioners on pension credits to claim Fuel Allowance, will leave millions of people struggling to stay warm. These individuals just barely surpass the overly low threshold and are left to fend for themselves.

It is disheartening that while such individuals are reeling, wealthier MPs continue to enjoy benefits they hardly need. The truth is these individuals earn far more than £220 weekly, a fact that makes their claiming fuel allowances for their homes  incredibly unfair. As our MPs, they should display solidarity with those less fortunate, rather than holding onto unnecessary benefits.

Considering that the basic salary for an MP is £79,468, as of April 2020, and that they also receive expenses to cover the costs of running an office, employing staff, having somewhere to live in London and in their constituency, and travelling between Parliament and their constituency (UK Parliament), there is no justification for them claiming fuel allowances.

It is high time that this unbalanced situation is rectified. We need to show our government that we believe in fairness for all, not benefits for the few. Please, let’s put an end to the fuel allowances privilege enjoyed by MPs who earn well over £220 per week. Sign this petition now to express your support for this fair initiative, and our less well off pensioners that we understand the bad situation they have been put in.
