End Femicide Now – Support a UN International Day Recognising Femicide
The Issue
End Femicide Now!
Without naming femicide, we cannot confront it. Without recognition, there can be no accountability. — IKWRO
Every 10 minutes, a woman or girl is killed by an intimate partner or family member. The latest UN report on femicide reveals that 60% of all female homicides are committed by someone they know.
In the United Kingdom, a woman is killed by a man every three days. These killings are not isolated incidents or “domestic tragedies.” They are the most extreme form of gender-based violence, and we should call it what it is, femicide.
In the UK, these killings are recorded simply as “homicide” or “domestic homicide,” without recognising their gendered nature or motivation. When governments fail to name femicide as the most extreme form of violence against women and girls, they fail to act on it. Silence allows it to persist; recognition is the first step toward prevention and accountability.
IKWRO – Women’s Rights Organisation calls on the UK Government to champion a United Nations resolution establishing an International Day on Femicide.
This day would:
Honour the women and girls whose lives have been taken by gender-based violence;
Shine a global light on the scale of femicide and the urgent need for prevention;
Drive governments to record, report, and act on femicide as a distinct category within homicide data;
Stand in solidarity with women’s movements worldwide, from Latin America to Africa, Europe, and Asia, who have long demanded recognition and justice.
By backing this call, the UK can take a leading role in advancing women’s rights globally. Recognition is the first step towards supporting the millions of women and girls at risk of femicide.
We urge the UK Government to:
Support and sponsor a United Nations resolution establishing an International Day on Femicide;
Record and publish femicide data separately within national homicide statistics;
Provide dedicated funding for prevention, protection, and support for affected families.
Femicide can be prevented but only when it is recognised and addressed with action.
