The Issue

The euthanasia of healthy and treatable animals in Broward County is a deeply personal and moral issue for me. These animals, innocent and vulnerable, depend entirely on us for their protection and care. It is a profound injustice and a violation of my core beliefs in justice, empathy, and advocacy to witness them being unnecessarily euthanized when there are viable options for rescue and adoption.

The unnecessary euthanasia of healthy animals is a practice that offers no moral grounding and erodes the fabric of our community ethics. Broward County should implement measures to ensure that healthy dogs and cats are never put down simply because of space constraints, funding shortfalls, or convenience.

We propose the following actions:

1. **End Euthanasia of Healthy and Treatable Animals**: Only euthanize those who are severely sick, injured beyond recovery, or genuinely dangerous to society. This shift will ensure that every life is valued and given a fair chance at finding a loving home.

2. **Mandatory Rescue and Foster Holds**: Before any consideration of euthanasia, animals must be offered to rescue organizations or foster programs. This mandatory step will dramatically increase their chances of being adopted into a caring environment.

3. **Transparency and Public Reporting**: Shelters must be required to publish consistent reports on a weekly or monthly basis. This transparency will hold organizations accountable and allow the community to stay informed and involved in the wellbeing of these animals.

The impact on our community cannot be overstated. We are not merely dealing with statistics; we are addressing living beings that are part of the Broward County community. This proposed plan will not only save animal lives but also promote compassion, unity, and a high moral standard within our community.

Please join me in advocating for these necessary changes. Sign the petition to fundamentally change how our shelters operate and protect the future of all animals in Broward County.
