End Early Release of Violent Criminals Serving Life Sentences

End Early Release of Violent Criminals Serving Life Sentences

The Issue

In 1999, my brother, on the cusp of starting the Police Academy, was brutally shot over 7 times execution-style during a bank robbery while working as an armored truck guard in Long Beach, CA, leaving him permanently brain-injured and partially paralyzed. His dreams and our hopes were shattered by a violent criminal who is now serving a life sentence plus 25 years. Despite receiving a charge of attempted murder that was willful, deliberate, and premeditated, and having a Minimum Eligible Parole Date of February 2028, the shooter, under  CA legislator's pro-criminal laws, is now up for parole on March 26, 2025. This is unconscionable. Allowing vicious criminals to be released early for political grandstanding goes against any sense of justice for victims of violent crimes. Early releases are an affront to victims of violent crime, create safety concerns for communities, and make life sentences meaningless.

This is not just about one family's tragedy but an issue affecting countless victims across our nation. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics (2018), approximately 68% of released prisoners were arrested within three years, 79% within six years, and 83% within nine years. This alarming recidivism rate underscores the importance of ensuring that violent offenders serve their full sentences.

We appeal to a justice system that victims can rely on - one where rights are upheld, and justice prevails over political considerations. We urge lawmakers to stop abandoning victims and appeal to parole boards and CA legislators to prevent early release for violent criminals serving life sentences plus additional time.

The pain experienced by victims' families is immeasurable and lifelong; it should not be compounded by the injustice or fears of their attackers' premature release. Let us ensure that our justice system remains reliable for those who have already suffered too much.

Please sign this petition to uphold crime victims' rights, prevent the release of my brother's shooter, and maintain trust in our justice system.
