Good day:
Last night Nassau County Commissioners listened intently as Tim Maguire, Director of Animal Services, provided a three-month update on how the recently enacted tethering ordinance is impacting dogs in the County. Mr. Maguire stated that since May 23, 2017 the department has investigated seventeen tethering cases. In order to educate the public, Nassau Animal Services officers distributed ninety-two brochures offering alternatives to dog tethering.
Animal welfare advocates were hoping that Commissioners would close the loopholes and pass an ordinance that allows dogs to be tethered only when a responsible person is outside with the dog and the dog is visible to that person. Advocates were disappointed as Commissioners decided to delay passing an attended-tethering-only ordinance and opted for another evaluation in November. Until then, dogs will remain tethered in Nassau County.
While the Commissioner's decision was disappointing, their mood regarding attended- tethering-only has decisively changed from; what-the-heck is attended-tethering-only, to why do we need attended-tethering-only, to when are we going to move forward with attended tethering only?
If you want to make a difference in a dog’s life, then let the Commissioners hear from you. A few minutes of your life may get a dog off a chain for the rest of it's life.
