End Discrimination and Labeling of Ohu/Osu in Oguta Ameshi

End Discrimination and Labeling of Ohu/Osu in Oguta Ameshi
The Issue
I am writing this petition as a concerned member of the Oguta Ameshi community. It deeply saddens me to see my friends (people I love so much) being labeled as Ohu (slaves) and facing discrimination in our society. This labeling is not just a word, it's an oppressive tool that perpetuates inequality and division among us. The time has come for us to unite, respect each other's dignity, and end all forms of discrimination.
In our community, the practice of labeling people as Ohu/Osu dates back centuries. This caste-like system continues to affect social interactions, marriages, politics, and even religious practices. According to a study by the International Journal of Sociology and Anthropology (2013), these discriminatory practices are prevalent in many parts of Nigeria.
This is not just about my friends; it's about every person who has been marginalized because they were labeled as Ohu/Osu. We need your support to bring an end to this outdated practice that fosters division instead of unity.
By signing this petition, you are standing up against discrimination based on one's perceived status or caste within our society. You are advocating for equality among all members of Oguta Ameshi - because we should all be ONE.
WE HEREBY DEMAND THAT THE EZE-IGWE IN COUNCIL AND THE OGENE AND OKPARA'S TAKE A STAND TO END THE OHU CASTE SYSTEM IN OGUTA AMESHI COMMUNITY IN 2024.
Please sign this petition today and also share it to all Oguta Indigenes and Groups – let’s make a stand together against discrimination!
This Campaign is Co-Sponsored by OOED and IFETACSIOS.
The Oguta Ohu-Eradication Dialogue (OOED) is a coalition of Oguta indigenes and cultural groups who are collaborating with the IFETACSIOS organization to ensure that Ohu is abolished in Oguta in 2024. We believe that the Ohu practice is anachronistic and disgraceful and should never be associated with a beautiful community like Oguta Ameshi. We look forward to finally removing this stain on our rich and beautiful history forever. Let every Oguta person live in love, peace, equity, justice and progress.
IFETACSIOS (Initiative For the Eradication of Traditional and Cultural Stigmatization in our Society) is a grassroots NGO that has been in the forefront for the advocacy and abolition of Osu, Ohu, Ume, and caste systems in the South East region of Nigeria.
