Reform Gender Categories in Sports - Add Gender-Neutral or Unisex Categories in Sports

The Issue

Proposed Solutions: Add more sports categories like a mixed category or unisex category in sports that only have male category & female category.

We will email the World Athletics this petition as a proposed solution to help end discrimination among transgender & intersex individuals.

Why?

1. Biological sex (i.e. chromosomes/hormones/reproductive organs/etc.) are not binary.

People can be born intersex (i.e. have reproductive or sexual anatomy that isn't rigidly male or female).

Intersex Population

Examples: Turner syndrome is where someone assigned female at birth has a partially or completely missing X chromsome. Klinefelter syndrome is where someone assigned male at birth has XXY chromosomes. XX Male syndrome is where someone has a 46, XX karyotpe has phenotypically male characteristics. XXYY syndrome is where someone assigned male at birth has 2 extra chromosomes, one X and one Y chromosome.

Biological sex and chromosomes aren't a rigid binary because chromosome mosaicism is a condition where a single individual can have genetically different cells, including different sex chromosomes. Genetic chimaerism is a condition where an organism develops from two fertilized eggs that merge, causing the organism to have a mix of cells, including a mix of different sex chromosomes. Both of these conditions can cause someone to biologically have both female and male sex chromosomes at the same time.

It's possible for men & women to have overlapping testosterone levels, which indicates that testosterone levels shouldn’t be used to separate men and women in sports.

2. The American Psychological Association (APA) supports transgender women and girls participating in women's sports.

An excerpt: "In February 2021, the National Coalition for Women and Girls in Education issued a statement supporting transgender and nonbinary students’ full and equal participation in all education programs and activities, including sports... the American Psychological Association took the same position in February 2020 (APA, 2020)."
