End discrimination against women in the Nigeria Police Force

End discrimination against women in the Nigeria Police Force

The Issue

Any unequal treatment, including priority and privilege based on gender, is considered gender inequality.

Until recently, women were treated as second-class citizens in most countries, they were mostly under-represented in vital sectors and major decision-making institutions. This is an issue because gender inequality  can lead to long-lasting depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and Post-Traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Article 2 of the African Charter on Human and People's Rights, Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), Section 42 of the CFRN, 1999 as amended and even the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) prohibits gender inequality.

In Nigeria, the issue of gender inequality is very much rampant aside from these domesticated sections. The most recent discrimination is that of Ms Omolola Olajide, a police constable dismissed for getting pregnant out of wedlock.

Ms Omolola Olajide didn't hurt anyone by getting pregnant and deserves autonomy over her body. The Nigeria Police Force does not dismiss men for impregnating women out of wedlock but shames women for doing the exact same thing.
