The Issue

I've always loved experiencing the sun setting around 7 PM. The twilight hours allow me to unwind after a long day, soak in the beautiful hues of the evening sky, and refresh for the next day. However, with the current system of Daylight Saving Time (DST), from November to March, we turn our clocks back and trade those precious evening hours for morning light. It's a shift that disrupts our body's natural rhythm and affects our daily routines.

The practice of computing standard time with the seasonal changes was introduced during wartime to conserve energy. However, its effectiveness today is questionable. According to a 2008 study by the US Department of Energy, the energy savings from Daylight Saving Time amounts to just 0.03% of annual energy consumption. Furthermore, a 2017 study published in the American Economic Journal found that the energy savings during DST were essentially offset by an increase in residential electricity consumption due to an increased use of heating and cooling.

Apart from the marginal energy savings, the biannual time change takes a toll on public health. A 2012 study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology discovered that workplace injuries and heart attacks increased in the days following the spring DST shift. In addition, a 2020 poll from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine found that 63% of respondents supported the elimination of the time changes, primarily due to its negative impact on sleep patterns and overall health.

We can join the movement that has been gaining momentum across the globe. Arizona and Hawaii in the United States do not observe DST, and countries like Japan, India, and China have done away with the practice entirely. It's time we join these states and nations in adopting a more consistent and healthy approach to timekeeping.

Let's urge our government to consider the adverse effects of DST and move towards a more consistent year-round standard time. By doing so, we can improve public health, workplace productivity, and even mitigate minor energy consumption issues.

Please sign this petition if you believe that abolishing the yearly clock change can lead to brighter, healthier, and more consistent evenings for all of us.
