The Issue

As veterans who have served our country honorably, my wife and I can personally attest to the struggles that many veterans face in achieving homeownership, a cornerstone of the American Dream. During our service, we, like countless others, fell into the credit trap, burdened by financial challenges that accompany military life, including frequent relocations, deployments, and limited financial planning resources.

The current system unfairly penalizes veterans and overlooks their unique circumstances. Credit scores often fail to capture the full picture of an individual's financial responsibility, particularly for veterans whose credit may be impacted by factors beyond their control. For instance, a veteran's rental history often provides a more accurate reflection of their ability to meet financial obligations and should be considered as a more critical determinant in home loan approvals.

According to data from the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, around 11% of the adult homeless population are veterans, many of whom have been unable to secure stable housing due to restrictive credit requirements. It is unacceptable that those who have sacrificed for our nation return home to face such daunting barriers to one of life's basic necessities—shelter.

We call upon the United States Congress, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Federal Housing Administration to enact meaningful reform by eliminating credit score requirements for veterans seeking home loans. Instead, these entities should implement a more inclusive evaluation process that considers veterans’ rental histories, employment stability, and other relevant factors that better represent their financial responsibility.

This change is necessary to ensure that veterans can secure the homes they deserve without being shackled by outdated financial metrics. In doing so, we empower those who have served us bravely to fully participate in the American Dream they fought to protect.
