The Issue

Pets hold a special place in our lives, providing companionship, love, and joy. Yet, tragically, many dogs, cats, and other beloved animals face a grim reality—being euthanized solely because their owners no longer wish to keep them. This heartbreaking practice of 'convenience euthanasia' is not only a cruel and unnecessary solution but also an unethical one that must end immediately.

Many excuses to this behavior are: “Oh, I’m moving,” so they want to put down their dog. I saw a video of a veterinarian talking about this exact situation that happened to her. Her username is “doctor_cenee16” on instagram. She explained how she asked the owner if they could simply surrender the dog up for adoption and they said, “We don’t want anyone else to have him.” That is insane. If it was a human, that person would go to prison. But if it’s a dog? Suddenly no one cares, other than doctor_cenee16.

Instead of resorting to euthanasia out of convenience, we should be advocating for more humane and ethical methods. These include increased support for pet adoption agencies, more funding for animal shelters, offering respite care for pet owners facing temporary hardships, and educational programs to inform pet owners of their responsibilities.

Ending convenience euthanasia requires a collective effort from pet owners, animal welfare organizations, lawmakers, and the community at large. By promoting and supporting alternatives, we can foster a culture of compassion that values the lives of our companion animals.

We urge lawmakers to introduce and enforce legislation that prohibits convenience euthanasia, stop considering pets property nationwide and encourages responsible pet ownership. With your signature, we can take a stand against this cruel practice and give thousands of pets the chance to live full and happy lives. Please sign this petition to help end convenience euthanasia for our beloved pets. Together, we can make a difference.
