End Congressional Self-Policing: Reform the Congressional Oversight Committee

The Issue

Brief summary:

Congressional self-governance and lack of independent oversight lead to conflicts of interest, weakened accountability, and erosion of public trust, warranting the establishment of an independent oversight committee to ensure transparency and protect democratic principles.

---

The fundamental problem with Congress is that Congress sets its own rules, and there needs to be more independent oversight. Congress's self-governance creates conflicts of interest, allowing members to police themselves, which weakens accountability. This system can result in unchecked abuses of power, conflicts of interest, and unethical behavior, damaging public trust and transparency. The disconnect between Congress's actions and voters' interests erodes confidence in the institution.

Corruption and lack of oversight in congressional activities erode the very foundation of democratic governance, affecting all citizens regardless of political affiliation. When lawmakers prioritize personal gain over public interest, it leads to biased legislation, misallocating resources, and erosion of public trust. This undermines the effectiveness of government institutions, distorts economic policies, and weakens the social fabric.

According to the United States House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, their purpose is "to ensure the efficiency, effectiveness, and accountability of the federal government and all its agencies ... and (to provide) a voice to the people it serves." According to Representative Adam Schiff, it is "illegal for Members of Congress to knowingly trade, buy, or sell stocks based on inside information learned during their jobs." Every person on the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability is a also a member of Congress. Congresspeople compose the judge, jury, and executioner when overseeing Congressional activity. The Supreme Court has affirmed Congress's oversight powers over the executive branch but has never directly addressed the issue of congressional self-oversight.

When rampant bribery and open insider trading occur in Congress, every American bears the cost through inefficient public services, increased economic inequality, and a diminished voice in the political process. The absence of robust checks and balances allows special interests to exert undue influence, compromising the integrity of the legislative process and the principle of equal representation for all.

With growing concerns about government accountability and transparency, a thorough evaluation of the committee's performance is overdue. This assessment could identify areas for improvement in oversight processes and ensure the committee is fulfilling its crucial role in maintaining checks and balances. A proactive review now could strengthen the committee's ability to address current and future challenges in government oversight. We call on Congress of the United States of America to establish an independent oversight committee.
