The Issue

I was sexually abused most of my childhood by my father. The lack of education about consent and body autonomy left me unable to understand the nature of the abuse until I was almost 18 years old.

I know that I am not the only one.

According to RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), every 9 minutes, child protective services substantiates or finds evidence for a claim of child sexual abuse. Many victims are left confused and unaware due to the lack of proper education on their rights over their bodies and what constitutes as consent.

We cannot rely on parents teaching these topics at home, so how do we reach victims like me? We mandate that schools teach lessons on consent and body autonomy beginning in kindergarten. Teaching consent does not mean teaching children how to have sex. Examples of consent/body autonomy education look like this:

  1. Teach children the anatomical names of their body parts. When "cute" names are used to describe genitals, such as "cookie" for vagina, others may misinterpret the term when a child discloses abuse.
  2. Teach children that it is okay to say "no" even to adults.
  3. Help children identify 3 adults in their lives that they trust if they need to disclose something uncomfortable.
  4. Teach children that they never have to kiss, hug, or touch someone if they don't want to. Even family. A child does not need to hug grandma goodbye if they aren't comfortable.

Early education can empower children with knowledge about their rights, helping them identify inappropriate behavior at an early stage. It also fosters respect for personal boundaries among peers from a young age.

By signing my petition, you are advocating for the safety and well-being of all children in our society. You are taking a stand against child sexual abuse.
