End censorship! ALL candidates on the ballot deserve to debate. YOUR CHOICE, NOT THEIRS!
The Issue
We, concerned citizens of Wisconsin, urge the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association (WBA) to revise their debate criteria and allow all candidates who are on the ballot to participate in televised debates. It is crucial for our democracy that voters have access to a fair and inclusive platform where they can compare and evaluate all candidates running for public office.
Currently, the WBA's debate rules limit participation to only those candidates who meet certain polling thresholds or fundraising requirements. This exclusionary approach undermines the democratic process by denying voters the opportunity to hear from all qualified candidates who have successfully secured a place on the ballot.
The WBA Board will meet in January 2024 to decide debate access rules for the Nov 2024 election. It is crucial that we act now- not only by signing this petition, but by contacting the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association and its member stations- basically all commercial television stations in Wisconsin. Staff and WBA member leadership are listed here: https://www.wi-broadcasters.org/about-us/#contact
Our petition is driven by three key reasons:
1. Ensuring Voter Choice: By allowing only select candidates to participate in debates, we are limiting voter choice and potentially suppressing alternative voices that may offer fresh perspectives or innovative solutions. Every candidate on the ballot deserves an equal chance to present their ideas and engage with voters directly.
2. Promoting Informed Decision-Making: Debates play a vital role in helping voters make informed decisions about which candidate aligns best with their values and priorities. By excluding certain candidates from these discussions, we risk depriving voters of critical information necessary for making educated choices at the polls.
3. Upholding Democratic Principles: Democracy thrives when it embraces inclusivity, transparency, and fairness. Denying equal debate access contradicts these fundamental principles by favoring established politicians or well-funded campaigns over lesser-known contenders who may still possess valuable insights or represent underrepresented communities.
According to research conducted by FairVote.org, excluding qualified ballot-listed candidates from debates has become increasingly common across various states in recent years (*source available). Such exclusions not only undermine democratic values but also contribute towards voter disillusionment and apathy.
Therefore, we respectfully request that WBA revises its current debate criteria at their January 2024 board meeting so that all eligible candidates on the ballot can participate in televised debates. By doing so, WBA will demonstrate its commitment to fostering a robust and inclusive democratic process that respects the rights of all candidates and empowers voters with comprehensive information.
We believe that every candidate deserves an equal opportunity to present their ideas, engage with voters, and contribute to a vibrant political discourse. Let us come together as concerned citizens of Wisconsin and demand fair debate access for all candidates on the ballot.
Sign this petition today to ensure a more inclusive democracy in our great state of Wisconsin!
