End Canada's catch and release policy for child rapists

End Canada's catch and release policy for child rapists
The Issue
On the evening of August 30th, a man broke into the bedroom of a 3-year-old girl in Welland, Ontario, and violently beat and raped her. Cameras in the neighbourhood captured footage of the man entering the house, leading to his quick apprehension. To the community's horror, it was revealed that this individual had been released from jail just five months earlier, having only served 12 months after brutally assaulting a 12-year-old boy.
This incident is not just a personal tragedy but a glaring failure of Canada's justice system—specifically the "catch and release" policy for offenders of heinous crimes like child rape. This policy endangers our communities and permits repeat offenders to continue wreaking havoc on innocent lives. Statistics show that sexual offenders have a high rate of recidivism. According to Public Safety Canada, child sex offenders have a reoffending rate of 14% within four years. Evidently, the current system provides inadequate protection for our children and communities.
We urgently need change. The purpose of our legal system is to ensure public safety and justice for victims. Allowing child rapists to walk free after a short sentence undermines the very foundation of justice. We demand harsher penalties and mandatory minimum sentences that reflect the severity of their crimes. I am calling for the Canadian justice system to impose a minimum sentence of 10 years for child rapists and a minimum sentence of 25 years for a repeat offender.
Additionally, there should be no parole or early release for individuals convicted of these grievous offenses. Child rapists should remain incarcerated for the entirety of their sentences.
The safety and well-being of children in Canada are at stake. Let us stand up and demand that our government re-evaluates its policies to protect the most vulnerable members of our communities. Please sign this petition to end the "catch and release" policy for child rapists in Canada, ensuring our children are safe and justice is served.
