The community demands answers from Shana Hazan.
At Lewis Middle School, a disabled student of color was denied mental health services. The school allowed racial and ableist harassment to continue unchecked. When the student, fearing retaliation, refused to attend school, administrators threatened to send school police to their home.
This standard operating procedure is about one thing: legal cover.
This standard operating procedure is not about: the child.
This practice was reported directly to Shana Hazan. Her response? She said she would look into whether this is best practice for all students.
So we ask: What have you concluded, Shana Hazan?
Will you publicly denounce this harmful policy?
Or will you remain silent—and in doing so, uphold the practice of using school police for so-called "wellness checks"?
If you believe this is not best practice, if you believe students deserve care, not criminalization, then let Shana Hazan know:
We will not tolerate racism in our schools.
