End BSL Now! Stop the Unjust Killing of Innocent Dogs!
The Issue
Having served as a Military and Ministry of Defence Dog Handler for 18 years, I have witnessed the devastating consequences of Breed Specific Legislation (BSL). It is with great concern and a heavy heart that I write this petition to call to an end this discriminatory law that has been in effect for far too long.
I am deeply saddened by the fact that innocent dogs are being shot on the streets or put to sleep simply because of their appearance. This practice is not only cruel but also ineffective in ensuring public safety. It is time we acknowledge that the BSL has failed in its job to protect the public and time to take immediate action to review and reform it.
Let me share my personal story as an example. I rescued a dog as a puppy who falls under one of the breeds targeted by the BSL. She is a wonderful family pet, displaying all the qualities one would expect from a loyal companion. She loves other dogs and people, proving that the breed does not determine temperament or behavior.
Suffering with Depression and anxiety and complex PTSD she is my world and my reason to get up in the morning and I hope to train her to become a Pets As Therapy dog when she comes of age ( 9 months) and her good temperament can help others come to see that it is not the breed of the dog that causes the problems but the actual owners.
BSL was introduced with good intentions, aiming to reduce dog attacks and protect communities. However, it is important to base our laws on evidence rather than stereotypes or appearances alone. Numerous studies have shown that breed-specific legislation does not effectively reduce dog bites or improve public safety.
According to research conducted by organizations such as The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), factors such as responsible ownership practices, proper training, socialization, and education are key in preventing dog-related incidents.
It's time we shift our focus towards responsible pet ownership education programs instead of targeting specific breeds unjustly. By promoting responsible ownership practices like spaying/neutering, proper training methods, leash laws enforcement, and encouraging community engagement with local animal control agencies; we can create safer communities without resorting to the destruction of innocent lives.
Therefore, I urge the British Government and local MP's and Councillors of Salisbury and Wilton and the authorities to take immediate action in reviewing and reforming BSL. Let us put an end to this disgraceful practice that has caused so much pain and suffering for both dogs and their owners. Together, we can create a fairer, more compassionate society that values the lives of all dogs equally.
Sign this petition today to demand change! Let's ensure that no more innocent dogs are unjustly killed due to their appearance. Stand up against BSL and advocate for responsible pet ownership practices that truly make a difference in our communities.
Thank you for your support!
