End Breed-Specific Legislation in Prince George's County

The Issue

As a dedicated shelter volunteer, I've seen the heartbreak of countless 'urgent lists' - populated by dogs marked for death. More than half of these dogs belong to breeds currently banned in Prince George's County. It's a weekly tragedy. Incredible canines, full of untapped potential for companionship and service, are euthanized because of a ban that yields no results. An estimated 30-50% of our shelter population is composed of these banned breeds.

Breed-specific legislation, or BSL, is not just an ineffective tool in promoting public safety, it's wasting tax payer funds. Our resources should be allocated towards measures that do work, like education and enforcing humane treatment and responsible pet ownership. A study by the Journal of Veterinary Behavior concluded that it's not the dog's breed, but rather factors like socialization and the owner's responsibility, that determine the dog's temperament.

It's time for us to rethink, reform, and ultimately reverse Breed-Specific Legislation in Prince George's County. This does not mean that we ignore potentially dangerous dogs, but rather, we focus on the behavior of individual dogs and the actions of their owners rather than their breed.

Let's urge our policymakers to stop this wasteful and ineffective ban, and prioritize measures that truly make a positive impact. Dogs shouldn't be punished for simply being born. It's their heart and behavior that matter, not the breed. Breed-specific bans only create fear, misunderstanding, and do nothing towards creating a safer, more compassionate community.

Stand against Breed-Specific Legislation now, and sign this petition. Our dogs, and our community, deserve better.
