Le problème

In many communities across North America, boil water advisories have become a distressingly common reality. These advisories, issued when drinking water may be contaminated with harmful pathogens, underscore the urgent need for infrastructure reform and investment in safe, clean water systems. According to the National Resources Defense Council, over 40 million Americans are served by water systems that violate the Safe Drinking Water Act. Meanwhile, Indigenous communities in Canada report long-standing issues with water safety, with dozens of communities under advisories for decades.

Boil water advisories are not just an inconvenience; they pose significant health risks, particularly to vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems. Moreover, the need to constantly boil water places an economic strain on families and diminishes their quality of life. Our water infrastructure is aging, and without immediate intervention, these problems will only escalate.

To address this ongoing crisis, we urge policymakers at all levels—federal, state, and local—to prioritize funding for water infrastructure projects. This includes the modernization of water treatment facilities, the replacement of lead pipes, and the implementation of robust testing and maintenance protocols. We also call for the establishment of emergency funds to assist communities affected by prolonged advisories.

By investing in these critical areas, we can ensure that all citizens have access to clean and safe drinking water, maintaining public health and fostering community resilience. It is time for decisive action to prevent a future where boil water advisories are the norm rather than the exception.

Sign this petition to demand immediate action for clean and safe drinking water in every American and Canadian community.

For too long Indigenous lives, culture and land have been left as status quo. The quality of life is below par while The Gov of Canada consistently promise support however lack in action. Currently there is an overwhelming majority of First Nations, Inuit and METIS without clean drinking water. Some are STILL on boil advisory. This petition is going to be hand delivered in September 2022 on Parliament Hill and we would love all support.

In an address to the United Nations in New York; Canadian Water Activist Ms Autumn Peltier ended with:

“When we stand together as one, we are one voice and one Nation”

In Canada, while our water quality is ranked among the best in the world having 20% of the worlds fresh water, too many Indigenous communities across the country STILL struggle to access a safe supply.

Many water systems are at high or medium risk of contamination. International Indigenous Water & Rights Activist Autumn Peltier & The Dreamcatcher Charitable Foundation are working together now and taking action by gifting water filtration systems to First Nations communities providing a needed short term solution while aiming for a long term action plan with the Government.

While there have been significant long term plans to end Indigenous water struggles, there has been a lack of Government action.

The ‘right to water’ is recognized by the United Nations. It entitles every person, without discrimination, access to safe, sufficient, physically accessible and affordable water.
