The Issue
For years, I have lived next to the woods in Navarre, Florida, where bears have also made their home. Contrary to the narrative of them being dangerous, these magnificent creatures have never posed a problem to me or my community. Their presence in the forest has been peaceful, and they continue to live there harmoniously because their habitat remains undestroyed, providing them with ample food and water.
Sadly, despite this peaceful coexistence, Florida has allowed bear hunting, disrupting these creatures' natural lives. The justification for hunting often stems from claims of overpopulation or potential danger, but the current situation in Navarre proves otherwise. Our local bears are not only an epitome of natural Florida wildlife but are also an intrinsic part of our ecosystem, maintaining the balance in their habitat.
Bear hunting is not only cruel but unnecessary. Scientific studies suggest that controlled environments, like the one in Navarre, don’t exhibit the same overpopulation issues seen in other areas (source: Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports). Additionally, according to the Humane Society, bear populations are slow to reproduce, meaning hunting poses a significant risk to their sustainability.
We must adopt more humane and science-backed approaches to maintaining our wildlife than resorting to hunting. Improving preventative measures for human-bear interactions, enforcing stricter waste management policies, and increasing public education about living alongside wildlife should prioritize our efforts.
The future of Florida's black bears lies in our hands. Together, let’s safeguard the homes of these bears and protect our unique wildlife heritage. Join me in urging lawmakers and wildlife authorities to end bear hunting in Florida to preserve what makes our state truly special.
Please sign this petition to make your voice heard and help protect these incredible creatures from unnecessary harm.
