We, the undersigned residents, commuters, business owners, and visitors of Baguio City, call for immediate and sustainable action to address the worsening traffic congestion and road safety issues in our city. Baguio, known as the “Summer Capital of the Philippines,” is experiencing an alarming decline in mobility and accessibility due to outdated traffic management, lack of proper infrastructure, and the absence of an efficient public transportation system. Without urgent intervention, the city’s charm, livability, and economy will continue to suffer.

 

Baguio City’s traffic crisis affects everyone—students, workers, business owners, and tourists alike. Daily commutes that should take minutes now take hours, forcing people to adjust their work and school schedules, leaving them exhausted and less productive. Public transportation is overcrowded and inefficient, with jeepneys and taxis unable to accommodate the increasing demand, leaving many without reliable options. Pedestrians struggle with unsafe walkways, unregulated crossings, and reckless driving, making simple tasks like walking to work or school dangerous.

Local businesses, particularly those dependent on tourism, are also feeling the impact. Tourists, discouraged by the city’s worsening traffic, choose other destinations, leading to revenue loss for hotels, restaurants, and market vendors. Emergency services such as ambulances and fire trucks also face delays due to congested roads, putting lives at risk. If these problems persist, Baguio will lose its reputation as a vibrant, accessible, and welcoming city.

 

If no immediate action is taken, Baguio’s traffic problem will only get worse, resulting in:

• Longer Commutes & Lower Quality of Life - Residents will continue to suffer from wasted time on the road, increased stress, and reduced time with family.
• Declining Tourism & Economic Loss - Tourists will avoid Baguio due to transportation hassles, causing businesses to struggle and leading to job losses.
• Increased Air & Noise Pollution - Heavy traffic means more vehicle emissions, contributing to respiratory illnesses and harming Baguio’s natural environment.
• Higher Risk of Accidents - Poorly maintained roads, reckless driving, and lack of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure put lives at risk.
• Lack of Emergency Response Access - Congestion blocks ambulances, fire trucks, and police, delaying life-saving interventions.

Without a well-planned, long-term solution, Baguio’s road crisis will become irreversible, turning the city into an unlivable, traffic-clogged area that no longer represents the beauty and efficiency it was once known for.

 

We cannot afford further delays. Every day, residents and visitors suffer from the consequences of poor urban planning, inefficient traffic management, and a lack of sustainable transportation. Baguio City’s government must act decisively to prevent an irreversible decline. We urge officials to implement comprehensive and long-term solutions, including:

• Public Transport Modernization - Invest in an efficient public transportation system, such as eco-friendly buses, organized jeepney routes, and alternative transport options to reduce private vehicle dependence.
• Stricter Traffic Law Enforcement - Implement and strictly enforce no-parking zones, pedestrian lanes, and anti-reckless driving policies to improve road safety.
• Road Infrastructure Improvement - Repair and maintain major roads, build alternative routes, and create dedicated transport hubs and parking spaces to ease congestion.
• Sustainable Mobility Solutions - Promote and invest in bike lanes, pedestrian-friendly roads, and walkable city planning to reduce traffic and pollution.
• Emergency Traffic Management Plan - Ensure that emergency vehicles can pass through congested areas quickly by designating priority lanes and enforcing clear road access.

 

We, the concerned citizens of Baguio City, demand that the local government and relevant agencies prioritize traffic decongestion and road safety NOW. We need long-term, effective, and sustainable solutions to ensure that Baguio remains a livable, accessible, and thriving city for future generations.
