End Background Checks for Job Applications Where Not Required by Law

The Issue

A Fresh Start: Building a Fairer, Stronger America!

It’s time for real change in hiring practices. Background checks on job applications create barriers for qualified candidates, particularly in African American and Latino communities, who are disproportionately impacted by prior convictions and often face unjust hiring discrimination. For roles that don’t involve vulnerable populations, background checks are often unnecessary and prevent individuals from moving forward.

Why This Matters:
Millions of Americans, especially from African American and Latino communities, encounter barriers in employment due to prior records. This contributes to cycles of economic hardship and inequality, pushing individuals back into crime simply because fair opportunities are blocked. Eliminating unnecessary background checks is a vital step in promoting inclusivity and social equity.

Removing background checks from certain applications will:

  1. Reduce systemic inequality and promote fair hiring practices.
  2. Support economic stability by giving individuals a fair shot at employment.

  3. Lower recidivism rates by providing real opportunities for individuals to rebuild their lives.

We, the undersigned, urge businesses, hiring agencies, and lawmakers to:

  • End background checks on job applications for positions that don’t involve working with minors or handling sensitive information.
  • Shift hiring focus to candidates' skills and experience, leveling the playing field for communities that face disproportionate discrimination.

Help us promote justice and equal opportunity in the workplace. Sign this petition to remove barriers and support fair hiring practices for all!
