The Issue

An unfortunate incident this winter highlighted the need for change in our rabies control practices. A house cat, kept inside to protect local wildlife, managed to catch a bat in the attic and brought it to its owner. Despite the cat's usual confinement, this led to a strict four-month quarantine after a rabies vaccination, and the bat had to be euthanized.

These measures—euthanizing and decapitating bats for rabies testing and subjecting pets to extended quarantines—are outdated and unnecessarily harsh. In the 21st century, with advancements in veterinary medicine and technology, we should have improved methods for preventing and handling rabies without resorting to such drastic steps.

Rabies is a severe and potentially deadly disease, but current practices create undue stress for pets and their owners and result in unnecessary loss of wildlife. It's time for legislative bodies and health organizations to explore and invest in alternative measures that are humane, effective, and reflective of modern capabilities.

Let's advocate for updated rabies control protocols that ensure public safety while respecting animal life and well-being. With new techniques in genetic testing and rapid diagnostics, we can reduce the need for drastic measures such as lengthy quarantines and animal euthanasia.

Please sign this petition to urge policymakers to review and amend existing rabies control laws to incorporate innovative and compassionate solutions. Together, we can protect both our pets and wildlife more effectively.
