End Annual IHS Fee Payment for Prison Officers on Sponsorship

The Issue

As a dedicated prison officer, I am personally conscious of the diverse roles we take on daily, and the challenges that accompany these responsibilities. Our prison officers tackle the societal rejects and manage physical and mental health crises among inmates. Additionally, we are trained to work in the capacity of social workers, thus contributing immensely to the recovery and integration of these individuals back into society. All these functions are health-related and indeed form the core of our role in serving the community.

Unfortunately, despite our health-centered roles, we are expected to pay annual IHS fees as we are on sponsorship. This financial burden contradicts our position as His Majesty's servants. Vindication lies in implementing an exemption policy for prison officers.

An example of a similar case is found in the healthcare industry, where healthcare professionals are exempted from the IHS fee (Migration Advisory Committee, January 2020 Report). Echoing such fairness towards prison officers will help lighten the financial load that deters many qualified individuals from joining this honorable profession.

It is time to give due credit for the essential health-oriented services provided by prison officers. Let's urge the government to adapt a just system that recognises our value and relevance. Please, sign this petition to end the annual IHS fee payment for prison officers on sponsorship.
