End Animal Suffering: Abolish Zoos Now!

The Issue

My family enjoyed numerous visits to zoos, but our perspective changed drastically when we discovered the horrendous conditions many animals endure in these establishments. The plight of these captive animals is one that we can no longer ignore. It is unacceptable that creatures who should roam free in the wild are used as mere money-makers, often treated with little respect or dignity.

Statistics underline the cruelty that animals in zoos suffer. For example, elephants in the wild travel up to 30 miles a day, while zoo elephants are often kept in enclosures that are less than one-thousandth of their natural roaming range (National Geographic). Beyond physical restrictions, the psychological distress animals endure is significant. For instance, a study in the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science found that captive large mammals exhibit signs of boredom and stress, such as pacing and biting the bars of their cages.

I am not opposing animal rescue and rehabilitation. What I am objecting to is maintaining institutions that profit from the mistreatment and suppression of wild animals. Zoos ship, lend, trade, barter, sell, and warehouse animals, which is not conducive to their well-being (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). It's time to replace zoos with more ethical alternatives such as wildlife sanctuaries and animal rehabilitation centres that prioritize animal welfare over profit.

Helping these animals doesn't stop at rescuing them, but extends to ensuring their rights and dignity are respected. Please join us in fighting for a world where every creature gets the life it deserves. Sign the petition to abolish zoos and stand up for animal rights.
