End AI-only grading of Ohio State Tests

The Issue

When I took the Ohio State Test, it was clear that something was wrong with how our essays were being graded. My classmates felt it too, and even our teacher shared our concerns. The grades we received just didn’t reflect our hard work or the essays we wrote. It was like the system wanted us to write in one specific, robotic way, not allowing any room for creativity or individual expression.

The Ohio State Tests, crucial for assessing student performance, should ensure fairness and accuracy. However, the current method of AI-only grading falls short. While AI can assist in checking factual data or grammar, it lacks the capacity to truly understand nuanced arguments, creative ideas, or the expressive power of language that students pour into their writing. Relying solely on AI for grading dismisses the human element that is so essential in education.

Several studies have shown that AI can be biased, often misjudging the work of students based on linguistic style rather than content or creativity (source: Education Week). This kind of automated grading system doesn't acknowledge diverse writing styles and ideas from a broad range of students, potentially disadvantaging many who do not conform to AI's limited perspective.

Ohio should aim to foster an educational environment that values human intelligence and judgment. Therefore, we call on the Ohio Department of Education to incorporate human oversight in the grading process, ensuring a balanced evaluation system. Teachers and educators have years of experience and are better equipped to appreciate and understand the subtleties and context of student writing, something beyond the reach of AI.

Together, let's advocate for a more fair and comprehensive grading system by implementing a mixed approach that values both human and AI input. It is crucial to the educational growth and confidence of Ohio students.

Join us in demanding change. Sign this petition to end AI-only grading of Ohio State Tests and promote a fairer future for Ohio’s young learners.
