During some of the most vulnerable moments in her life—when she was seeking help and protection—she was instead severely abused within residential treatment facilities.

This issue is not isolated. Across the United States, countless individuals and families are facing similar horrors. Residential treatment facilities, which are intended to be safe havens, too often become sites of abuse and neglect. According to reports, many patients in these facilities experience physical, psychological, and even sexual abuse. The very environment that is supposed to nurture recovery becomes a source of trauma. This is a stark evidence of a broken system in dire need of reform.

The time has come for national mental health reform. We must demand stricter regulations and oversight of these facilities.
