The Issue

My daughter, like many others, lives with severe mental health challenges. Her journey through the mental healthcare system has been fraught with experiences no one should endure, let alone in the places that are meant to provide solace and healing. During some of the most vulnerable moments in her life—when she was seeking help and protection—she was instead severely abused within residential treatment facilities.

This issue is not isolated. Across the United States, countless individuals and families are facing similar horrors. Residential treatment facilities, which are intended to be safe havens, too often become sites of abuse and neglect. According to reports, many patients in these facilities experience physical, psychological, and even sexual abuse. The very environment that is supposed to nurture recovery becomes a source of trauma. This is a stark evidence of a broken system in dire need of reform.

The time has come for national mental health reform. We must demand stricter regulations and oversight of these facilities. It is imperative to implement regular inspections and audits to ensure compliance with safety and care standards. Training programs must be mandatory for all staff members, focusing on humane and compassionate treatment approaches.

Additionally, support systems for the victims of abuse should be strengthened. They should have access to legal aid, counseling, and medical care to help them rebuild their lives. The voices of those affected must be heard and their experiences validated.

This petition aims to bring about critical changes in the way residential treatment facilities operate across the nation. It is a call to lawmakers, healthcare providers, and mental health professionals to prioritize mental health reform and safeguard the well-being of individuals seeking help.

Please sign this petition to stand against the abuse in mental healthcare facilities and to support the national mental health reform that is so urgently needed. Together, let us create an environment where individuals facing mental health challenges can find the true care and protection they deserve.
