End Abuse in Mental Health Hospitals and Ensure Safe, Compassionate Care

The Issue

We, are calling for immediate action and reform in response to the closure of Cygnet Joyce Parker Hospital, which was recently shut down following shocking allegations of abuse and mistreatment of patients. Vulnerable individuals seeking mental health care deserve safe, compassionate, and effective treatment—not neglect and harm.

The abuse experienced by patients at Cygnet Joyce Parker is not an isolated incident, but a symptom of larger systemic failures within the mental health care system. It highlights the urgent need for reform in the way mental health hospitals are monitored, regulated, and run.

Mental health issues are one of the most pressing challenges of our time. In 2023, 20.3% of children aged 8 to 16 were reported to have a probable mental disorder. Among 17 to 19-year-olds, the figure is even higher at 23.3%, and for young adults aged 20 to 25, it is 21.7%. These numbers reflect a national crisis, and it is essential that mental health services meet the highest standards of care for these vulnerable groups.

We are calling on the government and local health authorities to take the following actions:

 1. Investigate and hold accountable those responsible for the abuse and mistreatment of patients at Cygnet Joyce Parker, ensuring justice for all affected.
 2. Implement stricter regulations and oversight of mental health hospitals across the country to prevent abuse and neglect, and ensure the well-being of patients.
 3. Invest in better staff training and support, ensuring that mental health care providers are equipped to deliver compassionate, safe, and professional care to all patients.
 4. Improve access to mental health services to meet the increasing demand, particularly for children, young people, and young adults, and ensure that no one falls through the cracks.
 5. Establish a national inquiry into the failures of care within mental health hospitals, with a focus on learning lessons and driving meaningful reforms that protect patients.

We must ensure that what happened at Cygnet Joyce Parker never happens again. Together, we can demand change and ensure that all mental health patients receive the care and respect they deserve.

Please sign this petition to stand with us and demand safer, more compassionate mental health services for all.
