ENCOURAGING SUPPORT OF BILL C-226, THE “NATIONAL STRATEGY TO ADDRESS ENVIRONMENTAL RACISM"

The Issue

As concerned citizens, we urge you to take immediate action to promote environmental justice and mitigate climate change related issues. Our planet is facing unprecedented challenges, including rising global temperatures, melting glaciers, sea-level rise, increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters, and the loss of biodiversity.

Environmental justice means that all people, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or socio-economic status, should have equal access to clean air, water, and a healthy environment. However, in many cases, vulnerable communities, such as low-income and minority populations, and Indigenous communities are disproportionately affected by environmental degradation and climate change. For example, according to the Council of Canadians, 73 percent of First Nations’ water systems are at high or medium risk of contamination.

At the end of March, this signed petition will be sent to all Canadian Members of Parliament, who have decision making power for the passing of this bill. We believe that it is the responsibility of our leaders to take bold and decisive action to address these issues.

This includes:
- Addressing and acknowledging the disproportionate impacts of pollution and environmental degradation on marginalized communities.
- Investing in renewable energy sources and transitioning away from fossil fuels.
- Implementing policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit the use of plastic and other harmful materials.
- Supporting the conservation of natural habitats and biodiversity.
- Ensuring that vulnerable communities are protected from environmental hazards and have access to clean air, water, and healthy food.
- Providing education and resources to individuals and businesses to help them make more sustainable choices.
- Consulting with Indigenous peoples, racialized communities, and other affected communities when creating environmental policy.
- Encouraging and funding community-led research and advocacy.

It is crucial that we prioritize these issues and take immediate action to create a more sustainable future. We must not only protect our planet for future generations but also ensure that all communities can thrive in a healthy environment and community.

Sincerely,
