Encourage Respectful Terminology Towards Trump Supporters

The Issue

I am writing this petition as a concerned citizen and a voter who feels our democratic process is under threat by the divisive language being used to label and stigmatize fellow voters. Widespread usage of terms such as 'MAGA extremists' to describe supporters of Donald J Trump by prominent political figures and media entities, including President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, is concerning and potentially dangerous. This became increasingly evident following the recent attempted assassination on Donald J Trump.

Disparaging characterizations contribute to a culture of division and conflict, rather than promoting understanding and respectful political discourse. According to the Federal Election Commission, 74 million Americans voted for Trump in the 2020 election. It is unjustifiable to denigrate such a large, diverse group of voters with a single, extremist label.

As per the guidelines of the United Nations' Declaration and Plan of Action on a Culture of Peace, respect for diversity and dignity of all human beings is necessary for a stable and harmonious society. The ongoing labeling and stigmatization of Trump supporters as 'extremists' is contrary to this ideal and undermines the principles of democracy that the United States has always championed.

I plea to President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and all politicians and news persons to consider their language and rhetoric when referring to voters of differing viewpoints. It is crucial that we foster an environment in which differing political opinions can coexist respectfully, without fear of prejudice, violence, or devaluation.

Please sign this petition to advocate for a more respectful, understanding, and democratic political environment. Please sign, and stand for the dignity of all votes and voters.
