Encourage Mayor Wu & the Boston Council to prioritize animal welfare & shelters this year
The Issue
For the longest time, animal rights weren’t seen as relevant or necessary; however, in the early 1800s, the first animal cruelty law was passed in the U.S. Unfortunately, some companies, owners, and/or caregivers have ignored the rights of said animals, especially those who practice animal testing. Needing the money, big beauty or fast-chain companies, for example, continue to do harsh tests.
For example, a group of beagles were recently rescued from a company testing on them. Giving them painful procedures and chemicals, all of which were performed without anesthesia; they are now being treated for injuries, medical care, food, etc. Bringing me to why I believe more security and sureness of protection should be enforced for animals in shelters, aquariums, zoos, farms, etc. In MA, judges are extremely lenient to those who harm animals which is why I want to see a change in the protection for animals living in MA.
A lot of animals are deprived of the proper living conditions and medical (physical and mental) care that they need, especially for elderly animals. Lots of shelters decide to “give up” on these animals because they are seen as weaker. This is usually due to the lack of funding put into animal shelters / caretakers.
