The Issue

In Montgomery County, MD, my neighbor recently experienced a heartbreaking situation that demands public awareness and action. A pregnant, perfectly healthy mother raccoon was trapped and removed by a trapper, leaving a void in the local ecosystem and in my heart as a compassionate observer of wildlife. In our county, the laws dictate that a trapped raccoon must either be released near its habitat or destroyed. Unfortunately, this often leads to unnecessary euthanization of these innocent creatures.

Raccoons, like many wild animals, play a significant role in our environment. They help control insect and rodent populations and are an integral part of the biodiversity that sustains our ecosystem. Instead of viewing them as mere nuisances, we should seek to understand and coexist with these animals.

We must encourage humane solutions that prevent the removal and euthanasia of raccoons in Montgomery County, MD. There are several alternative approaches we can consider:

1. **Improved Public Education:** Launching programs to educate the community about raccoons' ecological importance and ways to coexist peacefully.

2. **Securing Refuse Containers:** Implementing stricter regulations for securely storing garbage and potential food sources, thereby reducing encounters with raccoons searching for food.

3. **Support for Non-lethal Control Measures:** Encouraging the use of humane deterrents and safeguards around properties to encourage raccoons to move on without harmful interventions.

By incorporating these strategies, we not only ensure the safety and welfare of the raccoons but also strengthen the community's relationship with urban wildlife.

It’s time for Montgomery County officials to re-evaluate and update the guidelines surrounding raccoon management to better reflect humane practices and environmental sustainability.

Please sign this petition to urge local authorities to prioritize humane treatment and effective management of raccoons in our beloved community. Your support is crucial in making Montgomery County a model for wildlife management and coexistence.
