Enact Zoning Laws for Strip Clubs and Raise Performer Age Limit to 21

The Issue

I am deeply troubled by the flagrant proliferation of strip clubs within city limits, an issue of decency and safety for the public that has strong effects on all communities. Strip clubs are a form of sexual exploitation, prostitution and trafficking that many of us find offensive, yet they are allowed to operate in full view of our homes, our workplaces, and our children. Furthermore, these establishments have often been associated with sex trafficking, and an element of criminality, attracting unsavory individuals involved in unlawful activities, creating an unsafe environment for everyone.

We must understand the gravity of this issue: strip clubs are not merely entertainment venues. Several studies have suggested they may be contributing to the objectification and trafficking of young women, many of whom are underage. According to a 2007 study by the U.S Department of Justice, detailed in the report "Estimating the Size and Structure of the Underground Commercial Sex Economy in Eight Major US Cities," strip clubs have been identified as one of the platforms for illegal sex trade. This alarming connection underlines the urgent need for stricter regulation.

Therefore, we urgently call upon our local government to enact zoning laws that require all strip clubs to be located outside city limits, away from residential areas or other places frequently visited by families and children. In addition, we want the age limit for anyone inside to be raised to 21 years, to ensure that these businesses are not able to exploit vulnerable young adults. Let us send a clear message that our community will not stand for sexual exploitation and offensive business practices. Sign this petition to protect our cities, women and our young people.
