Enact the Interstate Doxxing Prevention Act to Protect Personal Information
The Issue
I am a victim of doxxing, an act where my personal information was maliciously revealed online. This included my home address, social media pages, friends' contact information and even my Commander's contact details. The person responsible encouraged his large platform of followers to target and harass me and those close to me. As a result, I received death threats, rude comments and constant stalking.
This is not just about me; it's about all of us who use the internet daily for work or leisure. In 2019 alone, there were over 1.3 million cases of cyberstalking in the U.S., with many victims experiencing severe emotional distress (Bureau of Justice Statistics).
The proposed H.R. 6478 Interstate Doxxing Prevention Act would make it a crime to knowingly publish another person's personal information using mail or any facility or means of interstate commerce with intent to threaten, intimidate, harass or stalk someone.
We need this law now more than ever as our lives become increasingly digitalized. It will provide legal recourse for victims like myself who have had their privacy violated in such a cruel manner.
Let's stand together against doxxing and online harassment by urging our lawmakers to pass the Interstate Doxxing Prevention Act into law immediately. Please sign this petition today!
A study by the Network Contagion Research Institute found 51% of doxxing victims said they had experienced physical violence as a result. The same study found doxxing victims experienced higher rates of trauma, anger, stress and anxiety.
51% of people who were doxxed reported experiencing physical violence as a result. That means over half of doxxing victims endured real-world physical harm, demonstrating how doxxing extends far beyond the digital realm.
In addition to physical violence, the NCRI study found doxxing takes a significant psychological toll:
79% of doxxing victims said they suffered trauma and stress after being doxxed. Nearly 8 out of 10 victims are left with lasting trauma.
67% reported dealing with anxiety and panic attacks stemming from doxxing victimization.
62% felt lasting anger and bitterness over being doxxed.
58% experienced depression or sadness over their doxxing.
This data shows doxxing is not a harmless prank - it routinely destroys victims' sense of safety and wellbeing. The psychological impacts can last for years after the incident.
With over half of victims physically assaulted and large majorities reporting trauma, stress and anxiety, it's clear doxxing carries very real danger. These shocking statistics make a compelling case for the urgent need to criminalize and prevent doxxing through laws like the federal Interstate Doxxing Prevention Act. I hope this helpful in demonstrating the gravity of the problem. Please let me know if you would like me to expand on any part of this summary.
