Enact the Corey Bill to Protect Bereaved Families from Financial Exploitation

Enact the Corey Bill to Protect Bereaved Families from Financial Exploitation
The Issue
I am a grieving parent, having lost my son in a tragic murder. In the aftermath of this unspeakable horror, I encountered yet another distressing ordeal - monetary manipulation from various sources. This ranged from fraudulent car buying contracts to being on the brink of homelessness due to tarnished credit histories caused by late payments - a result of our initial, shock-absorbing period where paying bills was not our priority. This led to the painful experience of relying on family to house us.
It is in this context of personal tragedy and subsequent victimization that I call for the enactment of the Corey Bill - a law that provides a shield against financial exploitation for families reeling from the loss of a child. This law seeks to offer a grace period for grieving families to manage bill payments, without damaging their credit history or facing financial penalties.
In the United States, approximately 2,000 children die of injury each year (CDC, 2021). That's nearly five deaths per day. Each of these deaths leaves behind a family trapped with unwarranted financial stress amidst their boundless grief.
By bringing in the Corey Bill, we aim to address this predatory practice. Grieving families need compassion and support, not threats to their financial stability. The Corey Bill would give families the space to grieve, with the protection and peace of mind they need during such a devastating time.
We urge lawmakers to consider the heartbreaking realities faced by bereaved families and act upon them. Let's ensure the Corey Bill becomes law and provides a safety net for those grappling with the irreplaceable loss of a child. Please join in our fight for justice by signing this petition.
