Enact Stronger Tree Protection Ordinances

The Issue

We support TCNOLA's proposed tree protection ordinance which is linked below. If you do too, please sign this petition!

Tree Canopy Protection Draft Ordinance

Tree coverage in neighborhoods benefits everyone, not just those who live there. Trees provide shade and cooling factors that are crucial in cities like New Orleans to lower temperatures outside and lower electricity bills inside.

We call on the Department of Public Works and the Sewerage and Water Board to inform residents of construction and utility work that may harm trees in neighborhoods. We also call on the Director of Public Works to create a Comprehensive Tree Management Plan which puts in place a transparent pathway going forward for the city to keep residents informed of the city's plans involving work in neighborhoods.

Now is the time to act as there have been increasing reports that the Department of Public Works, the Department of Parks and Parkways, and the Sewerage and Water Board have been knocking down trees without letting residents of neighborhoods know. Trees are valued attributes of neighborhoods that residents grow personal connections with as the trees themselves grow and are an essential part of the special character of our beloved city.

Tree Canopy NOLA submitted a draft ordinance to the City Council on March 22, 2024, and the Council's Quality-of-Life Committee began hearing from the public about proposed ordinance reforms on October 7th.
