Enact Rent Control Legislation in Kentucky

The Issue

Landlords in Kentucky have raised rent almost to double what it was before COVID-19. This increase is neither sustainable, nor just, especially during such trying times where so many have had to deal with unemployment and other financial strains. The burden is often on those who are least able to bear it.

As reported by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, the cost of rent in Kentucky has been on a steady rise for almost a decade. This is a trend that has intensified during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, causing serious financial repercussions for the residents of the Bluegrass State.

The people of Kentucky do not deserve to bear this financial burden alone. It is high time that our legislative body steps in and addresses this imminent issue. Rent control is not only possible, but also necessary in order to ensure that renting remains affordable for everyone.

Rent control laws have been shown to work in cities throughout the United States and indeed, around the world. A study from the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation demonstrates that rent control significantly eases the financial burden for tenants, helping to avoid homelessness and promoting economic stability.

To protect Kentuckians from increased hardship and economic instability, we ask that the legislature passes a rent control law. This law should cap rents at a reasonable and justifiable level to mitigate the considerable financial distress many Kentucky citizens face.

Your voice matters. Your signature is a step towards a fairer housing landscape in Kentucky. Sign this petition and join the fight against these unjust rent hikes.
