Enact Mandatory Rehabilitation Laws for Severe Alcoholics in Australia

Enact Mandatory Rehabilitation Laws for Severe Alcoholics in Australia

The issue

Can’t Stop Won’t Stop

This plea stems from a deeply personal and painful experience. I have a 46-year-old brother, a father of five, who is spiraling towards death due to alcoholism. In Australia, attending rehabilitation is a choice and unfortunately, my brother, like many others, is succumbing to his addiction rather than choosing to fight it. He is a sick man, yet the system allows him to sit and drink himself to death, effectively ignoring his plight and those in similar situations.

Statistics reveal that 3,000 people die each year due to excessive alcohol consumption in Australia (source: Australian Institute of Health and Welfare). The same report acknowledges that this devastating situation could be improved if the necessary steps are taken to revise the legislation concerning addiction treatments.

We are advocating for a change in the existing law; a mandatory rehabilitation when alcoholics are close to death. By doing so, we could prevent thousands of Australians from losing their lives prematurely due to alcohol-related causes, thereby saving numerous families from undergoing unbearable pain.

In honor of my brother, his five children, and countless other families grappling with the devastation of alcoholism, I ask for your signature. Together, let's call for a change and make mandatory rehabilitation for severe alcoholics a reality. Please sign this petition today.
