Enact Legislation Allowing Individuals with Disabilities to Marry Without Losing Benefits
The Issue
Since I was 14, I've known multiple couples who were deeply in love and wanted nothing more than to commit their lives to each other through marriage. However, they couldn't because they risked losing their disability benefits - a lifeline for them. This is not just their story; it's the story of countless others across our nation.
The current law penalizes disabled individuals who wish to marry or cohabitate by reducing or eliminating their benefits. This policy effectively forces them into a heartbreaking decision - choosing between love and essential financial support. It's time we change this unjust law that infringes on the basic human right of choosing one's life partner without fear of economic repercussions.
According to The National Organization of Social Security Claimants' Representatives (NOSSCR), 9.2 million Americans rely on disability benefits for survival. Yet, these same individuals are denied the right to marry without risking these crucial supports.
We call upon our legislators to enact a new law that allows people on disability benefits to marry and/or live together without any threat of losing their much-needed assistance. Everyone deserves happiness and security in love and life; let us ensure our laws reflect this fundamental truth.
Please sign this petition today, urging lawmakers to create legislation that respects the rights and choices of disabled individuals in matters of love and marriage.
