Enact a two-person safety rule for Iowa's skilled trades
Enact a two-person safety rule for Iowa's skilled trades
The Issue
As a dedicated plumber with 22 years of experience in the pipefitting industry, I have witnessed firsthand the growing need for heightened safety measures for skilled tradespeople. Working alone has often exposed workers like me to unnecessary risks. But, being appointed by the governor to the Iowa Plumbing & Mechanical Systems Board inspired me to channel my passion for safety into meaningful action.
In Iowa, skilled trades professionals such as electricians, Plumbers, Pipefitters, Sprinkler Fitters, HVACR Service Technicians, Welders, Pipeliners, carpenters, utility workers and all construction workers play an indispensable role in building and maintaining the infrastructure of our state. However, many of these jobs are performed in isolation, increasing the risk of injury or even death. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the rate of fatal work-related injuries among construction workers is 11.1 per 100,000 workers, highlighting the urgent need for preventative measures.
Currently, there is no mandatory rule in Iowa requiring skilled tradespeople to have a safety buddy or partner when working on potentially dangerous tasks. States that have implemented a two-person safety rule, like California, have seen a significant reduction in workplace accidents. This change is not only essential for preserving lives but also beneficial for improving overall job satisfaction and productivity.
Therefore, we urge the Iowa State Legislature, specifically the members of the House and Senate Labor & Workforce Committees, along with Governor Kim Reynolds, to establish a two-person safety rule. This rule should be a legally binding requirement enforced by Iowa Osha and the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing (DIAL). Such a step would ensure that no skilled tradesperson works alone in hazardous conditions.
By signing this petition, you join a collective effort to prioritize safety within our essential workforce, promote an environment where skilled tradespeople can perform their jobs without fear, and ultimately preserve the well-being of our valuable community members. Together, let's make Iowa a safer place to work for everyone. https://youtu.be/ZB9FWzt_7AI
