Enact a Ban on Private Fireworks Displays and Implement Silent Fireworks in Public Shows
The Issue
As a vet nurse, I encounter countless stories of domestic pets and wildlife, left in a state of sheer terror due to the extreme noise produced by fireworks. These animals are unable to comprehend the source of this overwhelming noise, often reacting with extreme anxiety or fear. We need to change this.
It is for this reason that we urge the implementation of regulations banning private firework displays, requiring a licence for specific occasions instead. Additionally, public firework events should utilize newer technologies of silent fireworks, which can provide the spectacular visual entertainment associated with traditional fireworks without causing distress to animals.
Studies show that noise from fireworks can reach up to 155 decibels, far above the human pain threshold, let alone our furry friends' significantly more sensitive hearing (source: WHO). It's estimated that 45% of dogs in the UK show signs of fear when they hear fireworks (source: RSPCA). This issue extends to wildlife as well, with various reports of birds flying into buildings, and small mammals abandoning their nests due to fireworks (source: RSPB).
We are calling for compassion towards these voiceless creatures that share our world and our homes. The joy of fireworks should not come at the expense of their wellbeing. Please, sign this petition to prioritize the welfare of our loving animals over a few minutes of human amusement.
