Enable Recreational Flows at Abiquiu Wave during Weekends
The Issue
This is a personal mission, deeply tied to promoting safe, recreational outdoor activities within our community. The Abiquiu Wave, a man-made construction in Abiquiu, New Mexico, was built with considerable effort and investment. It has been a beacon for aquatic enthusiasts - young and old - serving as a key spot for kayaking and river surfing. Something similar already exists above the reservoir, where weekend recreational flow is allowed for rafting.
Yet, there's a snag. The Albuquerque authorities and the Army Corps of Engineers do not permit recreational flows of 700 cubic feet per second (CFS) or above from Friday morning to Sunday afternoon at the Abiquiu Wave. Lowering the flows slightly during the week and increasing at a set schedule over the weekend would open up this fantastic resource to community enjoyment without compromising resource conservation.
Why then, can't the same principle be applied to the Abiquiu Wave? Kayaking and river surfing are a significant part of our local culture and a source of delight for many. It’s time for us to support this cause and bring about a change that will not only promote local recreation but also reflects the beauty of New Mexico's natural resource management.
We are calling on the Albuquerque authorities and the Army Corps of Engineers to permit recreational flows of 700 CFS or above at the Abiquiu Wave from Friday morning to Sunday afternoon. We believe in the possibility of balance - between environmental sustainability, recreation, and our community. Help us achieve this harmony by signing this petition.
