Enable Legal Adoption of My Son by His Stepfather

The Issue

My son has had the privilege of having an incredibly loving stepfather in his life since he was just 4 months old. Over time, this bond has grown organically, crafting a relationship that is full of love, mutual respect, and deep trust.

In many households across the country, stepchildren and stepparents share an undeniable bond that resembles that of a biological relationship. According to Pew Research, 40% of all households in the U.S have at least one step-relational member(Pew Research, 2011). This is a testament to the fact that families are built on more than just blood ties, but predominantly on real feelings of love, connection, and mutual respect.

In our case, my husband, being a stepfather, focuses on shared activities with our son and shows real interest in his life. His support has fostered a stable and secure environment for our child to grow, learn, and be loved. But despite this significant role he plays in our son’s life, he lacks the official status that would cement his-love-grown parenthood. This status is necessary, not just symbolically, but also from a legal standpoint.

Thus, we call upon the necessary authorities to facilitate the legal adoption process for stepfathers who have proven to uphold the wellbeing and interest of their stepchildren over time. We urge the responsible bodies to review our case and consider the strength of the bonds that have been built and nurtured over years.

Please sign our petition so we can give my husband the recognition he wholly deserves as my son's father, and so many others in his position can enjoy the same rights and recognition.
