Enable Early College Students to Participate in Carlsbad High School Sports

Enable Early College Students to Participate in Carlsbad High School Sports
The Issue
As a parent of two students enrolled in the Early College program, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges they face when attempting to participate in sports at Carlsbad High School. My daughter, eager to join cheerleading, was disqualified due to her choice of school. The reason? Practice is held during 7th hour at Carlsbad High School, which coincides with 6th hour - a study period - at the Early College. Despite this hurdle, we believe that with determination and hard work it is possible for these students to maintain their academic performance while participating in sports.
My son serves as an example of this balance. He has consistently maintained his grades throughout the year while juggling his academic and extracurricular commitments. Yet despite his success, he too faces restrictions on participation due solely to his enrollment in Early College.
Early college programs are designed to provide students with advanced educational opportunities and should not limit their ability to engage fully in high school life. According to a report by American Institutes for Research (2013), participation in extracurricular activities like sports can positively impact student's academic achievement and social skills.
We call upon Carlsbad High School/Early college high school administrators and policy makers within our district's education system: please revise your policies so that all students - regardless of whether they attend traditional high schools or early colleges - have equal opportunities for involvement in sports activities.
