Local agriculture is the backbone of our nation’s food security, rural economy, and cultural heritage. Yet, it often does not receive the focus and support it deserves. Instead of prioritizing the strengthening of our own farmers and domestic food production systems, we continue to rely heavily on imported goods, especially staple products like rice. This reliance compromises our nation’s food sovereignty, weakens the livelihoods of our farmers, and undermines sustainable agriculture.

In the Philippines, agricultural sectors such as rice production have faced persistent challenges. Chronic underinvestment in modern farming tools, limited access to high-quality seeds and irrigation, and systemic issues like land conversion have suppressed local yields and made it difficult for farmers to compete with cheaper imports. Imported rice, while temporarily stabilizing prices for consumers, has flooded local markets, pushing farmgate prices below the cost of production and discouraging agricultural production.

Supporting local agriculture is one of the best ways to improve food security and strengthen rural communities. Giving farmers access to funding, training, and sustainable farming methods can increase food production and make the food system stronger. Policies that provide financial, technical, and infrastructure support are essential for building a more reliable and self-sufficient food system. These steps also protect farmers’ incomes and make local agriculture more competitive and sustainable in the long run.

Moreover, comprehensive agricultural policy reforms that emphasize local farmer support, including financial and technical assistance, infrastructure improvements, and sustainable farming incentives, are widely recognized as essential for building resilient food systems and reducing overreliance on imports. Such reforms help ensure stable food supplies, protect farmer incomes, and make local agriculture competitive and sustainable over the long term.

By empowering our farmers with better access to resources, investment in technology, improved infrastructure, and supportive agricultural policies, we can strengthen local agriculture, achieve greater food security, reduce dependency on imported staples, and ensure the future prosperity of our communities.
