Empower people affected by disability to have their voices heard
The Issue
For many families, the daily reality of navigating a world not built for their loved ones with disabilities is a struggle that goes largely unnoticed. As a father, I have seen firsthand the profound challenges we face while advocating for support for my 15-year-old daughter who has complex needs. Our family’s story is one of many. Yet, these stories rarely reach the ears of those who can make a change.
The lack of awareness and understanding leaves us feeling isolated and unheard. Despite living with these challenges 24/7, accessing appropriate support and having our experiences respected and acknowledged feels like an uphill battle—a struggle that has taken a toll on my mental wellbeing and that of countless others. We commit to shielding and caring for our children, but who shields us?
Individuals and families affected by disability have deeply personal stories that illuminate the gaps in support systems. According to the UK Office for National Statistics, around 14 million people live with a disability in the United Kingdom, and yet, many have to fight tirelessly to have their voices heard in matters that affect their lives directly.
By sharing these narratives, we not only foster a deeper understanding of the complexities involved but also shed light on the systemic changes needed. We call upon policymakers, local councils, and disability advocacy groups to create platforms and initiatives that elevate and prioritize narratives from those who live amidst these challenges.
Concrete measures could include:
- Establishing council-based committees that include representatives from the disabled community and their families to advise on policy changes directly affecting them.
- Funding storytelling initiatives organizations that focus on capturing and broadcasting the lived experiences of people with disabilities.
- Implementing regular forums where families can share experiences with service providers to build trust and nurture empathetic support networks.
These steps would serve not only to empower those affected by disabilities but also foster a more inclusive society where every voice matters. With your support, we can bring these stories to light and make sure they reach the corners of the policy rooms where real change can happen.
Please sign this petition to amplify the voices of those who's stories are often untold and pave the way for systemic change that promotes inclusivity and empathy towards those living with disabilities and their families. Together, let's demand a just and attentive society.
