Waive Foreign Domestic Workers Levy

The Issue

Petition to SG Government to waive foreign domestic worker levy in households.

Govt has waived levy for all business but not for domestic workers and in Straits times it mentioned, "those who hire foreign domestic workers are not eligible for any levy rebates, but MOM said households are supported "on multiple fronts".

Sadly to say, the support given is insufficent  as there are incidents whereby both couples lost their job or one of them has lost the job, not being paid during circuit breaker, and other reasons, etc.  These domestic worker employers are struggling to pay their domestic workers salary. They can't simply just send the domestic worker home. Firstly it incurred cost, flights have stopped and most importantly because if they do so, when they got a job they will have issues hiring one again. Hiring a new domestic worker upfront payment is approx 3k to 4k. If family is facing financial issues for these few months and they send the worker back, government do you think they can employ one again by paying so much upfront when they found a new job after struggling for months due to this Covid?

Government please come to know that now domestic workers is not a luxury, they are hired so parents can continue working and hired so there is someone to look after the elderly and there are lots of jobs out there who doesn't allow you to go back on the dot at 6pm to attend to kids or the elderly.

This petition is to appeal for the waiver of foreign domestic workers levy to help households with kids and elderly because the employment of such domestic worker is not for their own luxury.

In this pandemic, families are struggling. Some jobless. Almost the whole Singapore is facing such issue and foreign domestic workers dont feel it because they are not affected and they still get food, electricity and full salary.  Employers can't reduce their salary and have to continue paying them full salary. Foreign domestic workers are also requesting for 4 paid off days as they are unable to go out since April. This increases the employers budget which makes the household budget/expenses even tighter.

Waiving the levy is helping these employers to at least ease the household budget.
