Petition updateEmergency: Save Our Peninsula’s Wildlife Before It’s Too LateShire Responds (Sort Of) — Let’s Keep Pushing!

Take a look at this before-and-after shot of a tree near the corner of Raymond and Keith Streets, Tootgarook. In the “after” image, with the native foliage stripped away, all that remains is a mirror bush—an invasive weed species.
It’s hard not to feel like there’s a quiet campaign to push out our local wildlife. When we remove their shelter and replace it with invasive plants, what future are we leaving for them?

On April 28th, I lodged a formal complaint with the Mornington Peninsula Shire regarding the reckless behaviour of the crew wielding chainsaws on my nature strip.

Surprisingly, there has been some follow-up already. I received a call from the Shire, but it came from a no-caller-ID number and left an unclear voice message, so I haven’t been able to respond yet.

Then, without any notice or arrangement, a man wearing Ventia logos on his hat and jacket appeared at my property - as viewed on my security camera. He has helped me solve one part of the puzzle.

For those who aren’t aware: Ventia is one of the largest infrastructure service providers in Australia. They’ve recently been awarded a contract by the Mornington Peninsula Shire for “comprehensive tree management.” It’s now clear they’ve subcontracted GSO Tree Services — the local crew responsible for the destruction we’ve been documenting and protesting.

It looks like we’ve hit a nerve. So now’s the time to turn up the pressure.

Let’s keep sharing this petition widely — especially now, while they’re clearly in damage control mode. The petition will close on May 11 to submit to Council ahead of their May 14 meeting.

Together, let’s make sure our voices — and our trees — are impossible to ignore.
